Sonic Rivals, released in the year 2006, is a racing video game that is a part of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games series. Backbone Entertainment developed the game, and Sega published it for the PlayStation Portable.
The game's plot follows when a mysterious Onyx Island emerges out of nowhere, and the characters Sonic and Tails fly there to investigate. Soon, they try to confront Doctor Eggman, who exposes his latest device: a camera that can turn things and people into cards.
The game has a 2.5D perspective, a side-scrolling video game that is similar to the previous games in the series. Here, the characters race to the finish line while bypassing the level's obstructions. The game comprises six zones, where each zone is with three individual acts, the third being a boss battle, and totaling 17 stages. In Boss battles, which are at the end of levels, the player needs to defeat the boss before the opponent player characters do.
The game also features power-ups for the players to collect that provide extra offensive and defensive abilities. There are three types of game modes such as Challenge Mode, Story Mode, and Wireless Play Mode. Additionally, the game has an extensive collectible card system that crosses a total of 150 cards. When the players perform specific objectives, they can gain these collectible cards.
