This game is not focused on the basic idea of defeating enemies; instead, in this gameplay story, the hero of the game has to collaborate with various monsters. There is a monster challenge present in the game, which consists of taming the monster population by scouts sent to the different islands to find monsters and tame them. Utilizing beasts in fight trains the scout to become more efficient and battle robust, subsequently making it easy to discover different beasts and monsters to tame them and use them for the challenge. While playing this game, you would realize an optional battle arena instead of the traditional ladder system.
This game is the first game to debut in 3D gameplay compared to other games of the Dragon Quest Monsters series. Animation in this game is cell-shaded, and the fights are of a similar sort in other Dragon Quest games: orders are given in a turn-based style. The actions are then performed in 3D. Every beast in the game has a specific rank; every island has a risk level allocated to it. If you imagine that every island has beasts with the same ranks and positions, it's not the game's situation. There are minimum beasts present on the first island; many later islands consist of ranks much higher but have moderately low ranks of beasts.
