It is a platform video game released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance. This game is the sequel to Sonic Advance 2 and the third part of the Sonic Hedgehog series. The game stars Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Cream as they try to stop Doctor Eggman from building an empire on each of the seven parts of the earth, divided by Eggman. The game takes place over seven zones, and each has three acts and a boss fight at the end. The player takes control of one of the characters; each has different skills and abilities. At the start of the game, there are only two characters available, Sonic and Tails, and as the game progresses, the number expands to three more characters. Apart from selecting the main character, the player must choose the side-kick that lends a hand during the play. The pairings the player puts together significantly affect the enemies, obstacles, and path choices. The main character's speed and hang time, ground, and mid-air attacks change based upon the partner. Each world of the game has Chao-inspired mini-games that the player can play to earn extra lives. Apart from the primary adventure mode, there is also a time attack mode that lets the player practice speed runs. The adventure mode and the time attack support linked play between two copies of the game, meaning they can play them with a friend.
Doctor Eggman builds Gemerl, his robotic assistant, from the parts of the robot Emerl. Eggman tries to experiment with the Chaos Emeralds, but it divides the earth into several parts. He wants to set his empire on each segment of the world. Sonic, Tails, and other playable characters travel through the levels to stop Eggman and retrieve the Emeralds. The final fight occurs at the Altar Emerald Temple; if the player defeats Eggman without the seven emeralds, peace gets restored, but the game alerts that the player must find them all for a proper ending. If the player wins with the Emeralds, Gemerl attacks Sonic and uses the emeralds to become a giant. Sonic attains the supersonic form and destroys Gemerl.
